For ASTRON's Open Day in 2024, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy, I created a 3D representation of the Escape Room that visitors could experience in VR.
The actual Escape Room, developed by several members of the GameBakery, is set to open in 2025 at the Open Science Hub in Exloo. At the time of the Open Day, the room was still under development. To give visitors an early glimpse, I was asked to design a 3D replica. Using a Quest 2 headset, visitors could explore all three rooms and get a small taste of what the full, real-life experience will eventually offer.
I made 3D replicas of the existing decor of the Escape Room, as well as items that were still in the concept phase. I modeled and textured the 3D models, set up the VR project in Unity, and made it possible for players to teleport between the three different rooms using a tablet in VR.
Why a tablet? Most people are already familiar in how a tablet works and the interaction should work without the need of much explanation. Most participants were experiencing VR for the first time, and this form of interaction proved effective. While it may not appear to be the most innovative approach, the interaction itself was not the central focus and should not distract from the overall experience.
